Magdalen Wong (b.1981, Hong Kong) is currently based in Lisbon. She works mainly with found materials drawn from social media, advertisements, and films, as well as with objects and sounds collected from her daily meanderings. Her recent works wander into various fictitious characters, who often take on roles as mediators between peoples and spaces, histories and futures.
Her works hope to understand how we alter, influence, adapt to and traverse between the built social and natural environments and our solitary dream spaces.
Wong had received grants and attended residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (USA), Yaddo (New York, USA), Vermont Studio Center (USA), Goyang Art Studio (Seoul, Korea), Fjuk Art Center (Iceland), and Triangle Arts(New York, USA). She has exhibited at Kunstinstituut Melly (The Netherlands); Tai Kwun (Hong Kong); Spring Workshop (Hong Kong); Asia Society (Hong Kong); Para/Site (Hong Kong); Urban Institute of Contemporary Art (Grand Rapids, USA); Gallery 400 (Chicago, USA); Makeroom (Los Angeles, USA); Laurence Miller Gallery (New York, USA); NurtureArt (Brooklyn, USA); and Galeria Avenida da Índia (Lisbon, Portugal). She received her BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art, and her MFA with a Trustee Merit Scholarship at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in the USA.
